Grade 7 learners exhibit their innovations at the science congress fair.
Six schools in the Kasarani Cluster converged at La Salle Catholic School on Wednesday, July 12th, 2023, for the 1st Junior School Science Congress to showcase their innovative ideas for solving global ecological issues. The 2023 theme was a safer environment for a better tomorrow.
Agriculture, science, and mathematics are the fields in which learners came up with ideas to solve today’s societal issues. The following are the projects the grade 7 learners exhibited during the science congress:
Sound deterrent system
The sound deterrent system is an automatic system that uses power to produce sound that scares animals. The system uses waste materials that cannot decompose such as wires, old mortar from worn-out vehicles, metallic plates, and batteries. This helps reduce these materials in the environment through recycling. The system is harmless to both animals and humans and easy to operate.
Charcoal briquettes
Charcoal briquettes help households use safe and clean energy for cooking and thus decrease the number of trees cut daily for firewood. Wastepaper is the main raw material. The learners mixed the wastepaper and charcoal dust with water to produce briquettes, which are dried in the sun to make them ready for use.
Junior School Debate competition
La Salle Catholic school (grade 7) learners were the best debaters in the Kasarani/Embakasi Cluster debating competition for Junior school (JS) held on Tuesday, July 25th, 2023, at the Creative integrated school along Kiambu Road.
Twelve schools from the Kasarani/Embakasi Cluster participated in the competition, with three debaters from each school. The topics were: (1) Digital literacy is making children’s lives better; (2) it’s better to be book smart than street smart; and (3) individual or society, who is to blame for the degradation of moral values. La Salle Catholic School learners dominated all the topics and ultimately won the competition.
Paul Emuria, the JSS coordinator and teacher of English at La Salle School, said that the debating competition offered the learners the platform to showcase the core competencies acquired such as communication and collaboration, digital literacy and self-efficacy as well as other soft skills such as confidence and teamwork.
According to Mr. Emuria, adequate preparation with guidance was key to success in this competition. "Despite the short time, I was able to guide them to do research and prepare for the debate by watching videos of great student debaters. I am proud of my learners, and congratulations, he said."
